CAPE TOWN – Tributes continue to pour in for the former governor of the South African Reserve Bank and Finance Minister and many have hailed his economic legacy.
After the democratic elections in 1994, Mboweni served as Minister of Labour in the first cabinet of Nelson Mandela.
In August 1999 he became the eighth government of the central bank and stayed in that position for ten years until 2009.

Mboweni replaced the previous structure used for monetary policy decisions with the Monetary Policy Committee in October.
And inflation targeting became the policy objective for the bank.
After a successful stint in business, he returned to politics to serve as Minister of Finance from October 2018 to August 2021.
